The art of selection: why independent eyewear is the heart of Bromptons Opticians in Kensington

Yellow Flower

If you are looking for a new pair of glasses, our staff at Bromptons Opticians in Kensington know that glasses are not just a product on the shelf; they frame your whole character, and add to your aesthetic, so making sure you find the right pair is at the heart of all we do.

We believe your glasses should do more than just sharpen your vision; they should add to your character and make you feel confident. The first step in finding the right glasses is understanding why independent eyewear is the way forward.

The first impression: your face is your identity

Your face is how the world recognises, remembers and connects with you, and your glasses sit right at the centre of that first impression. That’s why we don’t treat eyewear as a commodity but as a handcrafted extension of your identity.

When you walk into our Kensington boutique store, you’ll discover carefully curated collections of independent eyewear brands, each selected for their design integrity, craftsmanship and character. We spend months hand-picking frames and taking the time to build an outstanding collection, because we believe your glasses should be truly unique.

As independent opticians, we have the freedom to choose what we genuinely love. That independence allows us to focus entirely on quality, comfort, fit and style, not just hitting sales targets.

The quality gap: why we obsess over the feel

There’s a noticeable difference between eyewear designed for a logo and eyewear designed for a lifetime of wear. Many fashion labels prioritise branding over build quality, resulting in frames that look good but are uncomfortable to wear, feel heavy, or flimsy and continuously slip down your nose.

At Bromptons, we’re interested in how a frame feels at 8 am when you start your day, and how it feels at 8 pm when you get in from work.

Materials that make a difference

We focus on hand-polished acetate that feels warm and smooth against your skin. We also look for medical-grade titanium that's featherlight yet strong. We check how the light catches the surface of the glasses, how the colour runs through the material, to make sure it’s not just sitting as a surface coating.

Because we conduct these checks, you’ll notice the difference immediately when you hold our frames as the edges are refined, the finish is neat, and nothing looks or feels rushed.

Comfort for all-day wear

For us, all-day comfort is non-negotiable. We want you to leave us with glasses that do not pinch at the temples, slip down your nose, or leave red marks on your face by mid-afternoon.

We pay close attention to hinge design and balance. The movement of your glasses should feel fluid and silky, not stiff or squeaky. This is why our eye examinations and styling conversations are so important. Clear vision is essential, of course, but how you feel wearing your glasses is just as important.

The selection process: global hunting and boutique visits

It takes time, travel and a lot of conversations to curate a collection like ours. Each year, we visit the “big three” trade shows to discover new talent and reconnect with the world’s finest makers.

SILMO in Paris

Creative, bold and fashion-forward. This is where emerging designers often make their debut.

MIDO in Milan

The beating heart of Italian craftsmanship and innovation.

opti in Munich

Renowned for German precision and technical engineering.

These shows give us an idea of where design is heading and allow us to meet people who care deeply about what they create. We network with some of the brightest minds in the industry, from independent designers to specialist lens innovators.

Here in Kensington, the process continues. We regularly invite designers and brand representatives into our boutique to see new collections up close. Handling frames in person allows us to assess the weight, balance, and finish properly. Occasionally, we’ll hand-pick one-off pieces we know will resonate with a specific client.

The curated line-up: makers who care about details

Our collection is built around brands that value craftsmanship as much as we do. Below is a selection of some of the brands we carry, with many more available in-store, including Cutler and Gross, Ørgreen, Robert La Roche, Garrett Leight and Maui Jim.

LINDBERG

Often described as the kings of minimalism, LINDBERG frames are incredibly lightweight and engineered with screwless hinges. Made from the highest quality titanium, they’re designed for durability without being too bulky. Customisation is at the core of what they do, which allows us to fine-tune size, colour and finish so your glasses are uniquely yours.

LINDBERG Horn

If you are drawn to organic luxury, LINDBERG Horn frames are crafted from genuine buffalo horn, ethically sourced and individually shaped. Each pair has its own natural grain, meaning no two are ever identical.

LUNOR

Understated and impeccably engineered, Lunor glasses feature titanium-reinforced hinges and polished acetate. These are admired for their detail. If you are looking for longevity, comfort and timeless design, Lunor glasses are right for you.

THEO

Our Belgian favourites. Theo is for the bold, the artistic and the unapologetically individual. Unexpected colour combinations and distinctive shapes make these frames conversation starters in the best possible way.

ETNIA BARCELONA

If you love colour, Etnia Barcelona delivers it with confidence. Inspired by art and culture, their frames bring energy and personality without compromising on build quality. The acetate is rich, durable, and beautifully layered, giving depth to the colour. The frames feel solid and comfortable.

AHLEM

With a distinctly Parisian soul and a subtle Bauhaus influence, Ahlem frames display exquisite craftsmanship, and some designs are finished with real gold plating, so they sit on your face like a piece of fine jewellery.

TOM FORD

Our one big name is Tom Ford. Unlike many mass-market fashion labels, Tom Ford continues to prioritise original design and high-end build quality. The result is eyewear that feels considered rather than commercial.

As you can see, each brand in our collection earns its place. If it doesn’t meet our standards for comfort, design and durability, it simply doesn’t make it onto our shelves.

The Personal touch: a collaborative way to find your fit

We have the freedom to explore with our frames, and when you visit us, it’s not about a quick transaction. It’s a relaxed, collaborative chat. We’ll discuss your lifestyle, your wardrobe, your work, and how you want to feel in your glasses. We’ll consider face shape, skin tone and how different colours interact with your features.

Sometimes the right frame is the one you’d never have picked up yourself. We’ll adjust, refine and experiment until something clicks. Our aim is for you to look in the mirror and feel completely at ease, as if the frame were made specifically for you.
